Roof cleaning chemicals for Sydney operators

Roofs usually take two steps: a soft wash to clean the surface, then a spray-and-leave for the lichen, moss and algae staining that a wash doesn’t shift. HydraLab supplies both in 20 L drums, picked up in Belrose or delivered on Wednesday.

Step 1: soft wash the roof (HydraWash + SH)

HydraWash goes in the tank with your sodium hypochlorite and helps the mix cling to the roof.

  • Roofs and moss: 3% SH at the surface
  • Lichen and heavy growth: up to 4% SH
  • HydraWash: 1:100 to 1:75 (1 to 1.3 L per 100 L of mix)
  • Pre-wet gardens and anything below the roofline, apply bottom up, let it dwell 5 to 10 minutes without drying, rinse top down.
  • Colorbond, anodised aluminium and powder coat: keep contact short and rinse very well. Above 3%, protect or rinse them continuously.

Step 2: HydraBio for lichen and moss staining

HydraBio is a spray-and-leave concentrate. Apply it on its own, on a clean, rinsed and dry roof.

  • Roof tiles (terracotta and concrete): 1:9 for most jobs, 1:7 for heavy lichen
  • Maintenance coat after a wash: 1:14
  • About 125 to 150 L of mix does an average double-storey home.
  • Pick a dry day with no rain forecast for 24 hours.
  • Soak the growth itself. Coverage matters more than strength.
  • Don’t rinse. The growth loosens over the following weeks and the weather carries it off over the months after.
  • Thick lichen may need a second application after 4 to 6 weeks.

Don’t mix HydraBio with HydraWash, detergents, chlorine or acids, because they cancel it out. Keep it out of ponds, dams, pools and gutters that drain to them: it is very toxic to aquatic life.

Questions operators ask

Can I put HydraBio in the same tank as my SH mix? No. Wash first with HydraWash and SH, rinse, let the roof dry, then apply HydraBio on its own.

How long does HydraBio take to work? Results are gradual: growth loosens over weeks and weathers away over months. Tell the customer that up front.

What if it rains straight after? It may wash off before it has worked. Reapply on the next dry day.

What SH strength for a tiled roof? 3% at the surface for roofs and moss, up to 4% for lichen and heavy growth, from the HydraWash label.
