Soft-wash concentrate
HydraWash
HydraWash is the soap in your soft-wash mix. It goes in the tank with chlorine (sodium hypochlorite), helps the mix cling to walls and roofs, and cuts dirt, grime and road film so the chlorine works faster and rinses clean.
DANGER Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Harmful if swallowed.
Mixing calculator
Before you start
- Check the weather. Avoid hot direct sun (the mix dries too fast) and strong wind (drift onto gardens, cars and neighbours).
- Put on your PPE: chemical goggles or a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves, long sleeves and boots.
- Walk the site. Note plants, lawns, ponds, pools, cars, glass, painted surfaces, Colorbond and anodised aluminium frames. Move what you can and plan to keep the rest wet.
- Test a small, hidden patch on anything painted, coated, timber or dark, and check it after rinsing.
- Have plenty of clean water on hand for pre-wetting and rinsing.
Step by step
- 1
Mix it
Use the calculator above. Part-fill the tank with water, add the chlorine and HydraWash, then top up with water to your tank size. Start with the weakest strength that suits the job.
Tip: For an X-Jet, pick your ratio (or your target strength) on the X-Jet tab and mix the bucket as it shows. Check the strength at the gun — draw varies with machine, tips and hose length.
- 2
Pre-wet everything around the work area
Soak plants, lawns, glass and anything below where you are spraying. Wet surfaces absorb less of the mix. Keep them wet for the whole job.
- 3
Apply from the bottom up
Spray at low pressure, starting at the bottom of the wall and working up. Working bottom up stops runs of mix streaking down over dry, dirty wall.
- 4
Let it dwell 5–10 minutes
Give it time to work. Do not let it dry on the surface — if an area starts to dry, mist it lightly with more mix.
- 5
Rinse from the top down
Rinse with low pressure and plenty of water, from the top down, so dirty water runs over areas you have not finished rinsing. Then rinse glass, frames and plants again.
- 6
Check and repeat
If staining remains, repeat on that area rather than going straight to a stronger mix. Heavy lichen on roofs may need a HydraBio follow-up on a separate day.
- 7
Clean up
Mix fresh for each job — chlorine loses strength once mixed. Flush your pump, lines and tank with clean water at the end of the day.
Do not mix. Never mix with acids. Do not mix with HydraBio. With HydraPure or HydraChlor, dissolve the powder fully first and add HydraWash last.
Surface guide
- Painted render and weatherboards
- 1.25–2%. Test first. Keep dwell short and rinse thoroughly.
- Brick and unpainted render
- 2%. Rinse well, including the base of the wall.
- Roofs (tile)
- 3%. Lichen and heavy growth up to 4%.
- Colorbond, anodised aluminium, powder coat
- Keep contact short and rinse very well. Above 3%, protect or rinse these continuously.
- Glass
- Pre-wet and rinse well to avoid spotting.
- Timber
- Chlorine can lighten timber. Use the weakest mix and test first.
- Concrete and flatwork
- Heavy staining up to 6% (48 L chlorine per 100 L) from a buffer tank only — an X-Jet cannot reach it.
Troubleshooting
I am getting streaks or tide marks.
Apply from the bottom up, pre-wet the surface, and do not let the mix dry before rinsing.
The staining is not shifting.
Give it a longer dwell while keeping it wet, or repeat. Move up one strength step only if needed. Lichen often needs a HydraBio follow-up.
Plants have browned.
Pre-wet more heavily, keep them wet, rinse them straight after, and drop the strength next time.
My X-Jet mix seems weak.
Draw varies with the machine, tips and hose length. Check the strength at the gun and adjust the bucket mix.
Safety
DANGER Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Harmful if swallowed.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection and face protection. Do not breathe mist, vapours or spray.
First aid
- If swallowed
- Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Immediately call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor.
- If on skin (or hair)
- Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water or shower.
- If in eyes
- Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
- If inhaled
- Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing.
If in doubt, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26. In an emergency dial 000.
Storage
Store locked up in a well-ventilated place. Keep closed. Keep away from acids.
